The ex-offenders that we serve come to us directly from Pinellas County Jail,
Department of Corrections inmates released into Pinellas County and ex-offenders
from the “streets” that have heard of The Pinellas Re-entry Project.
By far the biggest number of ex-offenders (Approximately 97%) is directly from
the Pinellas County Jail. That is where the inmates are made aware of who we are
and what we do through flyers, group presentations, face to face visits and of
course the inmate to inmate network.
Most contact starts by the inmate sending a “62” which is a form that requests a
need for services upon release. The majority of the content in these request
are, “I have no money, no job, no food, no clothing, no transportation and no
place to live once I am released”. Prior to their release date we schedule a
pre-release interview where we explain what we do, give them contact
information, and generally let them know that they do not have to face these
barriers alone. If they are indigent we do our best to put a daily bus pass in
their property or make arrangements to get them from the county jail to our
facility.
Once they arrive we do a full intake assessment of services needed. They have
access to our phones, fax machines and computers for communication. We have case
management on staff that explains the available services and discusses options
open for them to “address” their needs by making a plan.
We assist them in finding housing, refer them to recovery programs if needed,
supply a weekly bus pass, do job searches, assist in job interview appointments,
help with resume preparation and supply clothing and food if needed. We are an
ACCESS site to sign up for food stamps, cash assistance and Medicaid. We assist
getting an ID in order, have community voice mail to aid their ability for
communication, and mail boxes for a safe place for their mail to come.
In furthering a sense of community involvement, if they so choose, we invite
them to our on-site functions, such as recovery meetings, one on one spiritual
counseling, Bible studies and Church services.
